History

The Children’s Hour was a children’s magazine published by T.S. Arthur and Sons, Philadelphia, from January 1867 to June 1874. The magazine was edited by Timothy Shay Arthur, who insisted that contributors to the magazine take their mission of writing for children seriously. The magazine was published monthly, in two volumes per year. Arthur credited the title of the magazine to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Children’s Hour.” The Children’s Hour magazine was absorbed by St. Nicholas Magazine.
