This collection consists of scrapbooks, clippings, programs, and photographs relating to the Fort Worth Opera Association and the Opera Guild of Fort Worth. The scrapbooks were divided into two series. The collection is arranged in six series. The scrapbooks in the first series document the production of the operas while the second series document the activities of the Opera Guild. There is some overlap in coverage between the two series and the dates on the scrapbooks are approximate. Series III consists of newspaper clippings pertaining to the opera organizations. Series IV contains programs from opera productions. Series V consists of photographs related the Fort Worth Opera organizations. Series VI contains posters advertising opera productions. The extent of the collection is 36 boxes (18 linear feet).

History

The Fort Worth Opera Association was the inspiration of three women, Eloise McDonald Snyder, Betty Spain and Jeannie Axtell in 1946. They signed the charter for The Fort Worth Civic Opera Association on May 28, 1946 An organizational meeting was held on September 10, 1946 and Wed Maddox was elected president. Their first production was "La Traviata" on November 25 and 26, 1946. The Opera Guild of Fort Worth was organized by Mrs. F. L. Snyder in 194 to assist the Fort Worth Opera Association.
