Scope and Contents

This collection consists of papers, correspondence, and research of William Hunter McLean. It contains materials on Adam Hunter and his sons. The collection was kept in original order with only a few minor adjustments. The materials on R. D. Hunter were located in one large folder which was divided into several. A few items, such as charters and photographs, were separated like the because of their significance. The folder on the Warfield Family Research has information on the legend that Wallis Warfield Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, lived in Thurber, Texas. Also, included is the proof for From Ayr To Thurber and a copy of "Conquering the West" which is about David Hunter and his family. It is included in From Ayr to Thurber. This collection is related to the Beall and Magrudger Families Papers, McLean Family Papers and McCown Family Papers. The extent of the collection is 3 boxes (1.5 linear feet).

Biographical / Historical

William Hunter McLean authored the book From Ayr to Thurber: Three Hunter Brothers and the Winning of the West, published by the Fort Worth Genealogical Society in 1977. The Hunter family line descends from William Hunter (1728-1811) of Prestwick, Scotland. Descendant Adam Hunter (1811-1879) had three sons, Robert Dickie Hunter (1883-1902); William Hunter (1841-1899); and David Hunter (1843-1920). R. D. and William Hunter were prominent citizens of Fort Worth. R. D. was a director and managing executive for the Texas & Pacific Coal Company of Fort Worth and part owner of Hunter-Phelan Savings and Trust Company of Fort Worth. William Hunter was part-owner of the Fort Worth Live Stock Commission which was founded in 1895.
