Language of Materials

The Sandra Plummer Photograph Collection contains photographs that relate to the involvement of Sandra C. Plummer’s family in the Philippine-American War. The Philippine-American War began following the Spanish-American War of 1898, when Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. In February 1899, two days before the treaty was ratified by the United States Senate, fighting broke out between American forces and Filipino nationalists. The conflict lasted for three years (1899-1902), and in July 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed general amnesty and declared the conflict over. The United States established a colonial government in the Philippines, and in 1907 the colony convened its first elected assembly. In 1916, the Jones Act promised the Philippines eventual independence. It became an autonomous commonwealth in 1935, and was granted independence in 1946.
