Scope and Contents Note

The Mary Eugenia Millsap Skillman Papers consists of correspondence, photographs, clippings, publications, research materials, and other printed materials relating to Mrs. Skillman’s genealogical research, as well as personal correspondence and photographs and various other printed materials. The materials date from 1869-1980 and measure 5.21 feet (13 boxes). The collection is arranged into three series: Research, Personal, and Publications

The first series, Research (1869-1980), contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, tax receipts, certificates, notes, and other printed material used for Mrs. Skillman’s genealogical research. Materials have been arranged by family name, including by individuals. Most materials relate to the Millsap(s) family, but also include Allen, Durham, Haden, Barton, Jennings, Dick, and Pollard. When possible, materials were kept in original order and with the title previously assigned it.

The second series, Personal (1916-1980), contains correspondence, photographs, clippings, invitations, and other printed materials collected by Mrs. Skillman. Most of the materials in this collection relate to Mrs. Skillman’s immediate family.

The third series, Publications (1955-1974), contains brochures, book catalogs, and genealogical newsletters and books, and a map.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Eugenia (Polly) Millsap (1897-1982) was born May 24, 1897 to Thomas Fuller Millsap and Jane Caroline Dick in Rock Creek, Parker County, Texas. Mrs. Skillman was a 1916 graduate of Millsap High School, in the town that was named after one of Mrs. Skillman’s ancestors. In 1919, she married Harry Leslie Skillman, Sr. An avid genealogy researcher, Mrs. Skillman mostly focused on the Millsap(s) line, but also other branches of ancestors. Mrs. Skillman was a member of the Fort Worth Genealogical Society and the Millsaps Family Association.
