Biographical / Historical

Bishop Raymond E. (R. E.) Ranger was born January 22, 1899 in the Wilson Creek community in Bay City, Texas. His formal studies began in the Wilson Creek community where classes were held at Saint Mary’s Baptist Church. At age 15 he relocated to San Antonio, Texas and went to work. In 1916, at the age of 17, he acknowledged the call of God to the ministry. His first sermon was preached at Mother Church of God in Christ in San Antonio. Approximately 6 months later, he was licensed as a minister.

In 1918, he was united in marriage to Miss Edna Frankie Byrd who died in childbirth. A baby daughter survived. During an evangelistic trip to Houston, Texas, he met the former Miss Blanche Mae Bailey, who became his wife in 1925. To this union seven sons and three daughters were born. For sixty years until her death in 1985, Bishop Ranger had the support of his wife who labored with him whenever needed.

On January 16, 1930 he accepted the pastorate of the Trezvant Hill Church of God in Christ in Fort Worth, Texas. With the vision of a new building he built a new structure and the church was open and renamed Wayside Church of God in Christ in 1945. He was the pastor of this church for 70 years. Bishop Ranger passed in Fort Worth in 1992; he was 93 years old.
