Biographical / Historical

Claud R. McKee was born on July 22, 1910 in Comanche in Comanche County. He enrolled with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) on August 29, 1935 at Camp SGS-25-5 in Dublin, Texas. The CCC was launched on April 5, 1933 as a move to alleviate distress caused by unemployment through the establishment of a great chain of camps where young men would work on forest and park conservation projects. The Fort Worth District of the CCC was officially established on August 1, 1935. The headquarters were located at 1601 North Ballinger Street. The District included a section of southern Oklahoma, bounded, roughly, by Ardmore, Oklahoma, on the north; Dallas and Mesquite, Texas on the east; Mexia, Waco, and McGregor, Texas on the south; and by Brownwood, Texas on the west. Mr. McKee was discharged on August 4, 1937. He died on May 27, 1993 in Hood County.
