Scope and Contents

The Byers/Buckley/Hicks Family Papers consist of the Byers Family Bible, yearbooks, genealogy charts, certificates, funeral books, and historic newspapers. The materials date from 1878 – 2005 and measure 1.0 linear feet (4 boxes).

The first series, the Byers Family Bible (1878-2005), consists of the Byers Family Bible and the loose materials found between the pages, including family history material and photographs.

The second series, Genealogy Charts (n.d.), consists of two copies of the Buckley Family Tree.

The third series, Historic Newspapers (1944-1981), consists of the Longview, Washington Daily News, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Daily News, The Sunday Oregonian, the Saturday Evening Post, Mt. St. Helens Diary, and Time Magazine.

The fourth series, Oversized Items (1922-1949), consists of certificates awarded to William D. and James Walter Buckley and the funeral books of Mrs. Walter N. Dobbs, sister of Mrs. J. O. Buckley.

Biographical / Historical

The Buckley family, around whom this collection is centered, was a Fort Worth, Texas family.

Jesse Darnley Buckley was born May 1, 1885 and died December 24, 1942. He was a woodworker. Laura Ramsey Buckley was born September 27, 1888, in Plano, Texas, and died June 30, 1956, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Buckleys had two sons, William D., born December 20, 1911, and James Walter Buckley, born February 14, 1922. William D. Buckley died January 1, 1969.

James Walter Buckley graduated from Fort Worth Polytechnic High School in 1941. His entire working career was spent at J.E. Foster in Fort Worth. Mr. Buckley loved travel and photography. He was a member of the Fort Worth Camera Club and the Methodist Church. Mr. Buckley was honorary uncle to Mike Whitney, and Randy and Nancy Whitney Hicks.
