Scope and Contents

The Whitlock Papers Collection contains biographical files, research clippings, correspondence, diaries, and photographs. The comprehensive dates for this material are ( 1875 to 1970, with a majority of items dating from the 1960s.

Mr. Whitlock collected publications, press releases, resumes and correspondence to create biographical files for musicians and musical organizations. These are arranged alphabetically. Clipping files (magazine and newspaper articles, event ephemera, research material) are arranged alphabetically by subject or publication title. Although Mr. Whitlock's categories are somewhat fluid, the material remains in original order. Correspondence includes letters, more clippings, promotional material, drafts of replies, and invoices. This is also arranged alphabetically by sender or recipient. Twelve diaries record events (mostly musical) from 1905 to 1969. Photographs include those of performers and of a special event at The Cellar in 1962.

This collection would be of special interest to researchers interested in Fort Worth musical events and Texas music education.

Biographical / Historical

E. Clyde Whitlock (1886-1970) was a composer, musician, music critic and teacher. As a child, he learned to play the violin from his father. Mr. Whitlock settled in Fort Worth in 1909 and educated many students in Dallas and Fort Worth. He actively participated in many organizations such as the Texas Music Teachers Association, the American Guild of Organists, the Euterpean and Harmony Club, the Fort Worth Conservatory of Music, and Broadway Presbyterian Church. He also served as music critic to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram from 1926 to 1967.
